The FTA is Learning from Everyone Else Now

By Consaya Editorial — 2026-07-29

The FTA got a delegation from Sharjah Finance Department in early July. They came to see how the Authority runs things, and more importantly, what global practices they're adopting.

This kind of institutional benchmarking isn't theatre. When government bodies sit down and compare eight key operational areas—corporate excellence, innovation, work systems, quality—something changes downstream. For you running a consultancy or architecture practice in the UAE, that means VAT filings, corporate tax workflows, and compliance reporting are probably about to get an overhaul. Not immediately. But the FTA doesn't visit global standards for show.

The Authority's current focus is on three things. One is bringing their mechanisms and strategy inline with global best practices. Two is modernizing the tech they use. Three is sustainable enhancement of their work environment—which is code for making their systems faster and less bureaucratic. None of that helps you unless the outcome is simpler, faster compliance for businesses filing quarterly VAT returns and annual corporate tax returns at 9% over AED 375,000 in profit.

The interesting part is timing. The FTA has been pushing the Zero Bureaucracy Programme for years. They've had tax agent certification programs running. They've published corporate tax webinars and E-Learning modules. But this visible outreach to other emirates—benchmarking operationally—suggests they're not satisfied with where things are yet. That's useful information. When regulators start comparing themselves to international standards, backlogs clear, systems get redesigned, and filing windows tighten.

What matters for you is whether these operational improvements make their systems more efficient for taxpayers or just more efficient at enforcement. The FTA's Taxpayer Charter exists on paper. Global best practices sometimes mean faster processing, fewer errors in refund handling, clearer guidance on ESR compliance for service businesses. Sometimes they mean tighter data matching and audit triggers.

Consaya keeps your books filing-ready throughout the year so you're never scrambling when deadlines hit. As the FTA's systems change and become more integrated with the latest tech, the ability to generate your VAT 201 return and corporate tax filing pack automatically—without hunting for receipts or cross-checking numbers manually—becomes less of a convenience and more of a necessity. The FTA isn't standing still, and neither should your compliance setup.

Watch for guidance updates from the Authority over the next quarter or two.
