The FTA's new objections process: what changed and why it matters

By Consaya Editorial — 2026-10-20

The FTA changed how you challenge a tax decision. As of November 2021, the process for requesting reconsideration or filing objections shifted.

This matters because the old way of submitting appeals stopped working. If you've been assessed on VAT or corporate tax and you think the FTA got it wrong, you now have to follow a different path. The change wasn't a small tweak to deadlines or fees. It was a structural overhaul of how the Authority handles disputes.

Most business owners don't hit this stage often. But when something doesn't align—a refund denial, a penalty notice, a classification decision on goods or services—you need to formally object. The FTA published guidance on the new procedures specifically because the old method no longer worked.

Under the new framework, the step-by-step mechanics are tighter. That's partly good—clearer process, less ambiguity—and partly demanding. You can't wing it through an informal chat at a Tas'heel center. The Authority wants formal documentation, specific grounds for objection, and timely submission. If you miss the window or leave out required paperwork, your objection gets rejected before anyone even reads the merit of your case.

The timing is critical here. You have to act soon after receiving a decision you disagree with. Waiting months isn't an option. Getting the procedure wrong the first time doesn't give you a second bite. Most small to mid-sized consultancies, agencies, and architecture practices don't have a tax dispute lawyer on speed dial. You either do it yourself, hire a tax agent, or risk losing the objection on a procedural failure.

Consaya keeps your books filing-ready and flags what's due—quarterly VAT returns, corporate tax filing deadlines, payment dates. It doesn't manage objections or disputes after the fact. If you're contesting an FTA decision, you're beyond what the software handles. That's between you and a tax advisor or agent.

The new procedures came into force and they're still the rule. If you're sitting on an FTA decision that stings, read the guidance properly before you respond.
